New mandatory criminal history screening - now active

Since 5 October 2009, the Queensland Nursing Council has commenced mandatory criminal history screening for the following applications:

  • Queensland Graduates
  • Restoration
  • Interstate applicants who do not hold a current licence.
A criminal history means:
  • every conviction of the person for an offence, in Queensland or elsewhere, and
  • every charge made against the person for an offence in Queensland or elsewhere.
All convictions and charges are included, no matter when they occurred. Convictions include pleas of guilty or findings of guilt by a court, even if the conviction is not recorded. Applicants who have spent 12 months or more overseas in the last 10 years may also be required to provide an overseas police clearance. Council currently audits one in five applications, and this process will continue for international applications. Mutual recognition applications are exempt from any form of criminal history screening in accordance with the requirements of legislations.  All applicants will be required to declare any criminal history on their application form. Applications will not be finalised until the criminal history screening is complete. All applications requiring criminal history screening will incur a $50.00 charge as of 5 October 2009.For further details, please read the information sheet Criminal history disclosure and checking for all applications for registration, enrolment or authorisation as a nurse or midwife.

Great response to QNC scholarships

Application for QNC scholarships closed last month and we are please to announce that we have experienced another great response to this program. We received more than 204 applications for this final scholarship round.

Our scholarship program provides support to Queensland nurses and midwives for professional development. The aim of the program is to encourage nurses and midwives to undertake opportunties that will ultimately improve their knowledge, skills and judgement, and therefore, their quality of practice.

This was the final round of scholarships that QNC offered before QNC transitions into the new national body on 1 July 2010.
